The most recognizable entry in the Gel-Lyte series - aided by its well-timed reissue in the mid-2000s - is no stranger to street level wear as a style statement. Even back when it debuted, progressive-minded New York connoisseurs were attracted by this relatively high-cost, near-pinnacle performance piece for its interesting yet accessible appearance.
Still, fashion wasn’t necessarily the intention during it’s development, the split tongue fit is often considered the key selling point, but from a performance standpoint, it was the trim-density compression moulded EVA midsole for extra impact protection that really broke ground. That, plus the vertically extended medial and lateral mid foot frame for excellent motion control and new interpretation of the external heel counter, made this the most comfortable rider date from the GEL-Lyte series. The quirky details that complemented the function, like a reflective heel panel kept behind bars, have helped give this silhouette an appeal that just keeps escalating with each new colorway.
Right in time for Boston-based sneaker boutique Concepts 25th anniversary, the guys have linked up repeatedly with ASICS Sportstyle to present us their latest food-themed project on the cult silhouette. The team focusses on the global obsession of the tuna and its important role in Japanese food culture. Of course, the various shades of red are inspired by the flesh, while the reflective 3m details represent the sushi chefs traditional knifes.
But that´s not all! As Concepts is well known for their attention to detail, they also designed a special printed insole and packaging.
